As the olympic season is firing up and athletes are competing to reach the top, tensions and accusations are increasing. The Chinese technique of “cupping” which has also carried over to American athletes, has been practiced amongst olympians for a long time. Cupping involves a suction based massage therapy that increases that blood flow to a specific area; present on the famous United States olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. However, Russia is now closely analyzing the actual benefits that come from the use of cupping although it has already been deemed as legal. In a Russian translated report, they stated that muscle repair happens faster after physical activity with the use of cupping; leading to enhanced performance. They compared the effects to the use of the drug melodium which was used by Maria Sharpova earlier in the year which was declared illegal and resulted in a two year ban.
