Our Social Media Specialist, Amanda, recently got the chance to speak with Ilene B., who was (unexpectedly) at Peak Performance for two reasons. Read about her inspiring account of recovery below:
Before starting Physical Therapy, Ilene was suffering with intermittent vertigo over the past 20 years. When she found out she needed hip replacement surgery, she did not feel steady enough to go into surgery.
“It was terrifying because I not only experienced the dizziness, but it really like felt like a ship rolling. I was not just a little bit dizzy; I was unsteady to do my surgery.”
It is not uncommon that people suffer with severe vertigo following a major surgery. Ilene consulted her Vestibular Certified Physical Therapist, George, and he advised her to get a prescription from her doctor for vertigo treatment. Upon receiving her prescription, Ilene was introduced to Vestibular Therapy with George at our Lynbrook office where she took part in our Balance For Life program. In this sector of the program, specialized therapists work one-on-one with patients to help them regain confidence walking without relying on mobility devices.
It only took two sessions for Ilene to be cured from what she calls a “relentless case of vertigo.” She expressed her awe and gratitude for an “easy and short-term solution” for something that was debilitating to her life. She credits her Physical Therapist, George, and Physical Therapist Assistant, Julie, for being cautious, caring, and diligent in making sure she was always safe and on target with her progress.
“Fixing my issue with vertigo made all the difference in a successful therapy. The walker’s gone, the cane is gone, I’m good!”
Between learning to regain strength and mobility in her hip and simultaneously undergoing treatment for her vertigo, Ilene’s strength and commitment to her recovery is incredible. We are excited to see her graduate from Physical Therapy very soon!
