Lower lumbar spinal stenosis, is one type of lower back pain that may be treated with surgery. However, physical therapy has been proven to be highly effective in treating this type of pain and serves as an alternative to surgery. In lumbar spinal stenosis, the space located in the lower part of the spinal canal narrows. Pressure is placed on the spinal cord and nerves that extend from the lumbar vertebrae. This is usually a result of the degeneration of discs, ligaments and the joints between the vertebrae that make up the spine. This can cause an immense amount of pain in the spinal canal.
