Should you allow your children to play football? This question sparks conflicting opinions among many. According to The WEEK, recent research has claimed that children who play football are more susceptible to brain damage. Throughout the duration of the game, children suffer frequent hits to the head, which can cause casualties to the brain. If you are not aware, the age of young adolescence is the most critical period for brain development. Statistics have confirmed that during game time, children of ages 9 to 12, suffer from 240 to 585 hits to the head. The brains of 42 former NFL players were scanned and closely analyzed in a case study. The results displayed poor performance on cognitive exams, and abnormalities in the brain. In a similar study, researchers yet again, found brain irregularity among 24 high school football players. Neurologist and other physicians, are growing worried about the progression of the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy(CET). Symptoms of CET can be detrimental and effect the quality of a humans life. From loss of IQ, irate moods, headaches, and mood disorders are all severe symptoms of this brain disease. Helmets are a great form of protection however, no amount of head cushion can truly prevent brain damage. The brain is one of the most vital aspects of human life, sports should always practice using protection and a safe way of playing to insure the safety of an individual.
