Created by a professional team of physical therapist, physicians, and a hospital administrator, the Rapid Access Protocol( RAP), allows patients to begin immediate treatment within 72 hours during that typical four to six week waiting period to see a spine specialist. The plethora of benefits this protocol offers begins with an overall lower health and utilization cost, following an end result of a better outcome for the patient. The patient will undergo an introductory screening and analyzation, where the physical therapist will specially look for symptoms that would need urgent attention from a spine specialist. If the patient is clear of these symptoms that are deemed as “red flags,” they will begin their physical therapy process. The team closely examined ninety three individuals that became part of a study to measure the effectiveness of the protocol. Results exhibited success with greater improvement in physical function, ability to walk and sustaining physical activities. The patients in this study also displayed a lower requirement for x-rays, MRI’s and injections. Increasing the success rates of patients and lowering healthcare cost in the end, is an on going goal this protocol hopes to fulfill.
